Immigrant Visas

Miami Immigrant Visa Lawyer

Green Cards

When a person applies for an immigration visa, they do so intending to live in the United States, rather than individuals who seek non-immigrant visas, which allow the holder to stay in the country for a specified amount of time and for a specific purpose. A green card is another name for an immigration visa and legally recognizes the holder as a permanent resident of the United States. Green cards can be obtained through a number of means, which include, but are not limited to:

  • Family members of a U.S. citizen or Legal Permanent Resident may apply for a green card. The law specifies certain eligibility requirements that must be met to receive a family visa.
  • A green card may be granted in the form of an employment visa to a foreign national who has been hired to work in the United States. Both the employer and the employee have to complete the application process.
  • A green card may be granted to an immigrant who seeks asylum in the United States. If the asylum petition is approved, the immigrant will be given permanent resident status.
  • A minor child who has been abandoned or neglected, in some cases, may qualify for a Special Immigrant Juvenile Visa and obtain a green card if the visa application is approved.

Green cards must be renewed after ten years. At the time of renewal, the immigrant may decide that he or she would like to become a United States citizen. If the immigrant chooses to pursue citizenship, he or she will need to apply for and complete the naturalization process.
