Compromise Immigration Bill Fails to Pass in U.S. House of Representatives

Immigration lawyer

The immigration bill proposed by Miami Republicans as a compromise in the U.S. House of Representatives was voted down by both parties in a rare show of bipartisan agreement. Florida Representatives Mario Diaz-Balart and Carlos Curbelo had crafted the legislation to include concessions to both parties. Endorsed by President Donald Trump in a tweet and blasted by Republicans as too soft on undocumented immigrants, the bill was also roundly rejected by House Democrats. The final vote was 121 for and 301 against the passage of this compromise bill.

Trying to Please Everyone

The failure of the Curbelo and Diaz-Balart immigration bill makes it very unlikely that any immigration legislation will be passed before the 2018 election cycle. The bill included a pathway to citizenship for those in the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. These individuals, often referred to as Dreamers, are the minor children of immigrants who came to the U.S. unlawfully and who have often spent nearly their entire lives in this country. On the other side of the equation, the bill also included $25 billion in funding for the border wall proposed by President Trump.

Failing to Pass Legislation to Prevent Separations

Trump’s hardline approach to immigration has led to serious issues for the Republicans in both the House and the Senate. One of the most controversial policies implemented by the Trump administration is the separation of parents from their children at the border. The Curbelo and Diaz-Balart bill contained a provision that would have allowed parents and their children to be detained together while their immigration status was determined by the courts.
