Federal Judge’s Ruling Delays 100-day Deportation Ban for 14 Days

deportation ban

A ruling from U.S. District Judge Drew Tipton has temporarily prevented President Joe Biden’s deportation ban from going into effect. Biden had signed an executive order instituting a 100-day deportation ban to give immigration agencies a chance to examine their policies and to put in place new procedures that offer greater fairness for immigrants in this country. In the ruling, which was issued on January 26, 2021, Judge Tipton alleged that the Biden administration had not yet provided a concrete and reasonable justification for the 100-day moratorium on deportations.

No Deportation Ban for 14 Days

The new ruling does not permanently overturn the ban on deportations put in place by President Biden. Instead, it bars enforcement of the ban for 14 days and does not require immigration agencies to pursue deportations actively during that time. Opponents of immigration, however, have hailed the ruling by Judge Tipton as a victory for their harsh and reactionary views on the best way to manage legal and undocumented immigrants who come to the United States in search of a better life.

A Continuing Battle for Immigration Reform

When the temporary restraining order expires, the need for comprehensive immigration reform and a pathway to citizenship for undocumented individuals and families is expected to continue as a major priority for the Biden administration. This will offer new hope for many families that have been adversely affected by the policies instituted under the previous Trump administration.
