Three Miami immigration detainees have reported retaliation from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) after they spoke with members of the media about unsafe and unsanitary conditions inside the Glades County Detention Center. The report was filed with the Office for Civil Rights and Civil Liberties, a division of the Department of Homeland Security, and cites a number of retaliatory acts allegedly committed by jail employees against the individuals in the detention center.

According to details of the complaint, one detainee with asthma was pepper-sprayed and prevented from using video communication to speak with his spouse. Another detainee reported being pepper-sprayed after asking for a drink of water. The dorm in which the latter detainee was being held was left without any access to drinking water during that evening and for the morning following the incident. All three of the Miami immigration detainees mentioned in the report indicated that they were being harassed by the staff after their reports of the conditions inside the jail.

The Glades County Detention Center is administered by the Glades County Sheriff’s Office and houses about 700 inmates annually. The facility ranks in the top 10 detention centers in the United States in the number of COVID-19 cases reported among detainees. The complaint also includes information on the lack of precautions taken to prevent the spread of the virus among Miami immigration detainees.
