The End of 287(g)

The Federal Government announced that they are ending the program known as “287(g)”. This program, named after the regulation authoriziing it, allowed for local law enforcement to be deputized as federal agents in order to enforce the immigration laws of the nation.

This was a controversial program as it resulted in the undocumented immigrants in the United States being fearful of police officers. It also resulted in overzealous police officers focusing more on the undocumented than on crime in their respective jurisdictions. During this program, police officers took into custody undocumented immigrants where the only violation was minor traffic offenses or driving without a license, thus criminalizing these offenses only for the undocumented.

The elimination of this program is a welcome development and another sign that the Obama administration gets it.
