As Immigrants Gather at Border, Some Call for Reopening the Homestead Detention Center

Homestead Detention Center

Despite longtime opposition to the Homestead Detention Center as a symbol of abuses that occurred during former President Trump’s administration, President Joe Biden and some other key Democrats are considering reopening this facility to assist in housing and caring for unaccompanied children who are arriving at the border between Mexico and the United States. Representative Frederica Wilson, a Democrat from Miami, has voiced her support for reopening the Homestead Detention Center to provide added help in managing the influx of immigrants that are fleeing their home countries to request asylum in the United States.

A History of Harsh Treatment

Under the Trump administration, the Homestead Detention Center earned a reputation for unsafe and unhealthy conditions. In 2019, Homestead housed 1,200 children who had come to the United States without parents or legal guardians. Many of these children came from El Salvador, Honduras or Guatemala and are dependent on the actions taken by the federal government and immigration officials to stay safe and to find new homes in the United States. For many of these children, working with a qualified immigration lawyer is the best way to present their cases and to achieve their goals of living and studying in the United States.
