More Than 100,000 Cuban Immigrants Await Decision on Entry to United States

Cuban immigration to Miami

The restrictions on immigration put in place during the last decade and especially under former President Trump’s administration have left thousands of families in limbo as they await the arrival of loved ones. A total of more than 100,000 family-based immigration claims from Cuba are still on hold because of the suspension of visas at the U.S. Embassy in Havana, Cuba. This has effectively stopped all Cuban immigration to Miami and has left many families without any estimated timeline for reunification of their families in the United States.

Why Cuban Immigration to Miami Was Stopped

In 2017, the United States took the unusual step of withdrawing nearly all of its staff from the U.S. Embassy in Havana because of unexplained illnesses that affected numerous staff members and diplomats at the facility. The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services office in Havana was closed in 2018, which suspended all visa processing through this government facility. This has led to major backlogs for visa applications that would allow Cuban immigration to Miami.

A Huge Backlog of Immigration Applications

There are 78,228 pending family-based immigration claims at the National Visa Center as of November 2020. This is in addition to the more than 22,000 petitioners who applied for immigration to the United States through the Cuban Family Reunification Parole Program, which was intended to allow fast-tracking of Cuban immigrants who already have immediate family living in the United States. These figures do not include Cuban immigrants who have already filed all their paperwork and are simply waiting for an interview at the U.S. Embassy to complete their immigration application.
