Today the Obama administration announced that federal laws prohibiting the possession and use of marijuana will not be enforced in the States where possession and use of marijuana has been legalized.
The administration made it clear that while marijuana possession and use will still remain illegal under federal law, the government will not expend resources to enforce marijuana laws in the States where marijuana is legal with the condition that the States maintain strict rules with respect to the distribution of marijuana.
Attorney General Eric Holder communicated with the Governors of Colorado and Washington to advise them of the administration’s decision and cautioned that the federal government would be watching how the States regulate the laws.
According to President Obama, “We have bigger fish to fry”.
