New Programs Announced to Help Immigrants Achieve Citizenship

USCIS Grants

While most public attention is still focused on abuses by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and the U.S. Border Patrol, a new program initiated by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) offers new hope for some immigrants. The 2018 Citizenship and Assimilation Grant Program may provide as much as $10 million for educational programs intended for those legally in this country and seeking to become citizens of the United States.

Two Types of USCIS Grants

The funds made available by USCIS will be designated for one of two types of programs:

  • The Refugee and Asylee Assimilation Program will provide up to four grants to organizations that offer assistance to permanent residents who have been granted asylum in the United States or who entered the U.S. legally as part of the U.S. Refugee Admissions Program. To be eligible for these grants, organizations must offer educational programs that directly relate to obtaining citizenship in the U.S.
  • Grant opportunities through the Citizenship Instruction and Naturalization Application Services will be available to up to 36 organizations that provide educational programs for immigrants seeking citizenship and that offer assistance in navigating the process to apply for citizenship.

These programs can help those already in the U.S. to acquire the skills and knowledge needed to succeed in achieving citizenship. For recent arrivals, these educational options can also help immigrants to overcome the language barrier and to prepare more effectively for the citizenship examination and the job market.

The Right Legal Help Still Matters
