The rate of denials for asylum applications by immigrants in the Miami area reached an 18-year high in 2018. According to data compiled and released by the Transactional Record Access Clearinghouse of Syracuse University, immigration agencies denied 86 percent of the applications for asylum during the period between September 2017 and September 2018. At least part of this increase can be attributed to the limitations on the reasons for which judges can grant asylum to immigrants. These new limitations were put in place by Attorney-General Jeff Sessions in June 2018.
Asylum Denials Increasing Nationwide
Across the United States, more than 42,000 asylum cases were decided by immigration officials. Approximately 65 percent of these cases were denied, an increase from 42 percent just six years ago. Miami’s immigration court ranked second in the number of cases processed in fiscal year 2018, finishing just behind New York. This significant increase in denials of asylum requests could be the result of new guidelines put into effect by Attorney-General Sessions. These guidelines virtually eliminated the provisions that allowed for asylum approvals for immigrants who claim fears about domestic or gang violence as their reason for fleeing their home countries.
An Increasingly Hostile Environment for Immigrants
The sharp increase in denials for asylum seekers is emblematic of the approach taken by the Trump administration toward these vulnerable individuals.
