ICE Issues 420 Detention Requests for U.S. Citizens in Miami Area

Miami Ice Detention

Miami Ice Detention Request

Officials at Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) have reportedly issued requests for the detention of 420 U.S. citizens in Miami-Dade and Monroe counties in the state of Florida. These false deportation requests occurred between 2017 and 2019 and resulted in jail time for some legal residents in our area and across the United States. In these and other cases involving immigration issues, working with a qualified Miami immigration lawyer is the best first step toward resolving problems with ICE and other federal agencies.

Not a Localized Problem

According to the ACLU, the Miami area has apparently been hardest hit by these false detentions and deportation proceedings. In the past decade, however, Rhode Island has had 462 false detention requests. The state of Texas has had 814 of these cases. At least some of these false requests resulted in unjustified jail time for U.S. citizens.

Identifying the Cause of These Issues

Three basic factors have been identified as contributing to the increase in false detention requests by ICE officials:

  • A recent investigation by CNN indicated that ICE agents were regularly forging the signatures of their supervisors on detention warrants to avoid the document reviews mandated by law.
  • The Trump administration has significantly expanded the powers of ICE to detain all types of immigrants, including those who have committed no crime and who are only suspected of being in the country without documentation.
  • According to many immigration advocates and other authorities, the databases used by ICE and other federal agencies are often sources of outdated or erroneous information. This can lead to the detention of immigrants who have already become naturalized U.S. citizens or those with similar names or addresses to immigrants in the system.

Until these problems are resolved, the entire process is unsafe and unreliable for immigrants and citizens alike. Working with a qualified and knowledgeable Miami immigration lawyer is necessary to protect your rights if you have been targeted by ICE or other federal authorities.
